This was one of Tajinder's walks which was led for us by Pat Hart.

She kindly summarised the walk as follows:-

"It was a lovely sunny day. We had 28 birds which included sparrowhawk and nuthatch. Whitethroats were plenty in the grassland, singing away and displaying. We heard the occasional drumming of great spotted woodpeckers in the wood. Chiffchaffs and blackcaps sang competitively throughout the walk.
We had 6 butterfly species and one dead vole on the ground."

So the whitethroats were definitely new arrivals. We do now have some over-wintering chiffchaffs and blackcaps but they probably move somewhere else to breed. Apparently our winter blackcaps come from Germany!

If you go on one of our walks, we'd love it if you could email us a summary of the walk - it's always good to hear from a participant, please tell us what you think.
