The Mere at Ellesemere

The Mere at Ellesemere

The Mere in Ellesmere is a haven for Winter wildfowl and excellent counts of Wigeon, Goldeneye, Teal, Tufted Duck, Pochard and Shoveler are the norm. Large numbers of Great crested Grebe build up here and there are usually Goosander present. The Heronry is a local tourist attraction once Spring arrives (and tourists/day trippers are the biggest downside at a weekend) parking is sometimes quite limited! The Winter Gull roost is recently a shadow of it's former glory and as always, weekdays are best - there is always the chance of a white winger or Med Gull? Little Gull are possible in early Spring and find plentiful insects on which to surface feed. Common Gull are definitely 'common' in this area!
