FIELD TRIP VENUS POOL NR 27TH AUGUST 2017

Sunday, 27 August 2017

A few intrepid members met at Venus Pool on an unusually hot Bank Holiday Sunday. As well as enjoying the sun and numerous dragonflies, damselflies and wild flowers  we also amassed 30 species of birds in four and a half hours, thanks to our vigilant co-operation. Best sightings were two green sandpipers, an LRP and several young shoveler on the pool. Greylags and canada's were there in their hundreds!  In the woods we heard and saw goldcrest, wren and goldfinches with overflying chaffinches and swallows. On the neighbouring fishing pool were mute swan and two female goosander. In fact, it was noticeable how many females there were with fewer males overall, now that the breeding season is over. We enjoyed watching a solo heron fishing successfully and were pleased to be visited by a very clean song thrush beneath the main public hide!  All in all a very enjoyable team effort thanks to Carol, Chris, Sue and Jackie.

Carol W and Chris F, members from South Shropshire, really enjoyed joining you for your walk around Venus Pool today. Despite being August we were surprised how much we saw, the high points for me being the little ringed plover and the green sandpipers. Both the weather and the company were wonderful. Hope to join you again soon.
