Annual Beached Bird Survey

Location: Tollesbury in Essex, along the Blackwater estuary.

The beached bird survey is an international scheme to monitor bird mortality around the coast. 700 RSPB volunteers cover more than 1500 miles of coastline around the British Isles, with many others performing similar surveys on North Sea coasts in other countries.

Our allotted stretch of coast is at Tollesbury in Essex, along the Blackwater estuary. This is a delightful place to watch birds and the survey provides an excuse for a day out. We meet up at the car park at 11am.

If you would like further details of the survey, please contact Ted Bell at any group event.

PLEASE NOTE: In case of any changes to the travel arrangements, it is essential to check with Ted before travelling.

Heartwood Forest

Location: Heartwood Forest, north of Sandridge
Postcode: AL4 9DQ (Google map)

Woodland Trust forest for wintering woodland birds and raptors.

Meet by 10am in the Heartwood Forest car park, just north of Sandridge. AL4 9DQ

PLEASE NOTE:
A local walk may be cancelled at the discretion of the walk leader if the weather is very bad, please take this into consideration before joining any walk.

Details from the Woodland Trust website::
Our most exciting woodland-creation project yet, Heartwood Forest is being transformed into the largest new native forest in England.

The 347-hectare (858-acre) site is former farmland, and lies just north of St Albans in Hertfordshire. It features four small remnants of ancient woodland, which the new woodland will link up, buffer and protect, increasing valuable habitats for wildlife.

Since 2009 more than 300,000 native trees have been planted, with a further 300,000 planned over the next few years. As well as woodland, the site features scrub, grassland and wildflower meadows. Volunteers from Hertfordshire Natural History Society and The Woodland Trust are monitoring populations of plants and wildlife during the changes to the site - so far, numbers of many species of butterfly and bird have increased.

There is a network of paths including a public footpath and two bridleways, which run in and around the forest, as well as in the existing ancient woodlands. Most paths are un-surfaced and can be muddy in places.
