The heatwave continued but fortunately the clouds provided some welcome shade during the morning. The area by the Middleton Village Hall yielded several common garden birds - house sparrow, jackdaw, woodpigeon, collared dove, swallows and housemartins. The group of 7 agreed to participate in the Big Butterfly Survey for the first 15 minutes whilst following the hedgerow lane and 8 different types of butterfly were seen. Birdwise it was a reasonably succesful morning with many common species seen (Pied Wagtail, Stonechat, Linnet, Swift, Cormorant, Raven, Meadow Pipit and Kestrel). A view of a Yellowhammer with a mouthful of butterflies was the highlight of the morning. Another surprise was a recently dead mole (see picture) on the cliff path - perhaps it was a victim of the drought and very hard soil.
