At the start of Wild Challenge week, why not come and camp under the stars here at RSPB Lakenheath Fen? Similar to last year, we will be going a bit wilder by camping in the sandy area in Brandon Fen. This is a five minute walk from the car park and a 10 minute walk from the toilets.

Bug hunting and pond dipping will be available from 1.30pm onwards. After we have pitched our tents and had a briefing it will then be dinner time (please bring your own food!) We will then provide you with some marshmallows to toast over the camp fire. We will then for a dusk walk around the reserve to find out what goes bump in the night on the reserve. We will listen to the local bats using bat detectors and if it is clear, we will do some stargazing. Hot drinks will then be provided near the camping area.

The following morning, there will be an optional early morning walk around the reserve at 6am. After breakfast, we will see which colourful moths were trapped on the reserve the night before. Highlights may include seeing impressive poplar hawkmoths and elephant hawkmoths.

Weather permitting, there will then be a bird ringing demonstration by local bird ringer Simon Evans to see some of our residents in the hand. If you are lucky, you may even be able to hold one of the birds that has been ringed and then release it.

While the adults are taking the tents down, there will be a selection of activities to keep the children entertained. This includes more pond dipping and bug hunting, the chance to get creative with some craft activities and some games near the visitor centre.

This event is limited to 40 participants. Price includes all of the activities and the reserve entrance fee for non-members. Price also includes breakfast on the Sunday morning, which will consist of a breakfast bap and continental breakfast.

Please book via: www.eventbrite.co.uk or by sending a cheque to the reserve office. Please ring the office on 01842 863400 at time of booking to book your pitch and to provide your contact details so that we can get in touch about breakfast choices.

Please bring your own tent and camping gear! BBQ's and gas stoves are permitted in the camp area but must not be left unattended. Water buckets are available. Toilets will be open at all times and are a short walk from the camp area. A shower is available, please ask staff about this if needed.
