Midweek Walk - Lathkill Dale

Spotted flycatcher on perch

Wednesday, 20 June 2018

We set off on a warm, cloudy morning with Swifts, House Martins and Swallows hawking overhead.

Once we had crossed the river, it was up through woodland and out into wide open fields with farms and limestone walls, with Skylarks singing and Meadow Pipits displaying. Just before we reached Youlgreave, a Great Spotted Woodpecker grabbed our attention and, as we were struggling to see it, a lovely Spotted Flycatcher appeared. Following a leisurely picnic by the River Bradford, we returned along Lathkill Dale where we saw Grey Wagtail, Dipper, Blackcap and Redstart.

It was a lovely day's walk through very picturesque countryside.
